Police intensify nationwide operations for safer festive period─── ZENANDE MPAME 13:05 Wed, 08 Oct 2025

The police have officially launched their 2025/2026 #SaferFestiveSeason campaign, a nationwide initiative designed to combat crime during the holidays and ensure safer communities across South Africa.
The high-density operational plan, announced by acting minister of police Firoz Cachalia, will run from 1 October to 31 January 2026. It focuses on preventing and responding to criminal activity through intelligence-led and highly visible policing.
The campaign was launched on Tuesday (7/10) at the Dr Rantlai Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein and will be implemented in five phases. It aims to maintain law and order from the pre-holiday build-up to the post-holiday period, ensuring continuous protection for citizens and visitors.
‘It is designed to combat crime’
The Safer Festive Season launch is designed to combat crime during holidays, a period historically marked by increased movement, spending, and social activity, said national police commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola.
As South Africa enters this busy time, the police are intensifying their efforts through a coordinated national strategy involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
“The campaign is a cornerstone of the SAPS’ visible policing efforts and represents a massive mobilisation of resources to ensure public safety during a time when people are traveling, shopping, socialising and carrying cash more frequently,” said Masemola.
“This year’s campaign will focus on being proactive rather than reactive. We are intensifying our presence in communities to deter criminal activity before it occurs. Our members will be visible where it matters most: in malls, on highways, at border posts, and in residential areas.
“The safety of our people and visitors to our country is non-negotiable. Every police officer on duty this festive season carries the responsibility to serve and protect with integrity and vigilance.
“We cannot win the fight against crime alone. We call on every South African to be our eyes and ears to report suspicious behaviour and to help create a safer environment for all.”
The implementation of the Safer Festive Season 2025/2026 operations will be divided into the following phases:
- Phase 1: Pre-holiday season, from Wednesday, 1 October, to Sunday, 30 November;
- Phase 2: Start of Holiday Season, from Monday, 1 December, to Sunday,14 December;
- Phase 3: Holiday Season, from Monday, 15 December, to Thursday,1 January 2026;
- Phase 4: End of Holiday Season, from Friday, 2 January, to Thursday, 15 January 2026; and
- Phase 5: Post-Holiday Season, from Friday, 16 January, to Saturday, 31 January 2026.
