As the holiday season approaches, South African drivers are being urged to ensure their vehicles are road-ready.

With only eight weeks to go before holidaymakers hit the road, proper vehicle maintenance is just as critical as planning routes, resting adequately, and keeping devices charged, according to the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA). Professional inspections and safety checks can prevent breakdowns and accidents, making every trip safer and more enjoyable, the association emphasises

At the same time, KwaZulu-Natal authorities are intensifying road safety measures ahead of the festive rush. With more than 2,500 new blood and alcohol testing kits deployed, the province aims to maintain safer roads for families preparing for their end-of-year travels.

“Since August, more than 896 motorists have been arrested under the province’s Alufakwa Zero Tolerance and No-Nonsense Campaign,” said KZN transport and human settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya. “By removing reckless drivers from our roads, we have prevented countless potential fatalities.

“Looking ahead, the province is taking proactive measures to maintain road safety through the festive season. Over 2,500 new blood and alcohol test kits have been ordered to ensure continued detection and arrest of intoxicated drivers.

“The consequences of drunk driving are severe; offenders risk criminal records and spending up to 48 hours in holding cells. So the message is clear: drink, drive, and face the law.”

MIWA advises drivers to ensure their vehicles are ready with the following key checks before setting off this holiday season:

  • Insurance and licence disc: Make sure both are up to date and review your coverage.
  • Electronic components: Test air conditioning, radio, GPS, and sensors, all of which are critical to vehicle safety and comfort.
  • Radiator and cooling systems: Watch for fluid leaks or overheating. Green, orange, or yellow fluid under your vehicle may indicate a coolant leak that needs urgent attention.
  • Safety equipment: Keep an emergency triangle, tyre repair kit, torch, reflective vest, water, and first-aid kit.
  • Tyres: Inflate to manufacturer’s recommended pressure and check tread depth, including the spare.
  • Lights and indicators: Test all lights, including high beams, fog lights, indicators, and brake lights.
  • Fluid levels: Check engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, power steering, and windshield washer levels. Always keep extra water in the car for emergencies.
