As the busy Easter travel period approaches, authorities are encouraging motorists to ensure their vehicle licence discs and driving licence cards are valid to avoid disruptions on the roads.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says early renewals will help reduce congestion at licensing centres and prevent last-minute complications for travellers. Information on the traffic information system indicates hundreds of thousands of vehicle licence discs and driving licence cards will be expiring at the end of March.

This is just days before the busy Easter travel period. A total of 700,399 vehicle licence discs and 128,080 drivers' licence cards nationally will expire in this period and will need to be renewed. In Central SA, nearly 85,000 vehicle licence discs and 14,000 drivers' licence cards will expire shortly before Easter.

“Motorists should act early to avoid inconvenience during the peak holiday travel period,” says RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane. “With the Easter period fast approaching, the RTMC is advising motorists to renew their drivers' licences and vehicle licence discs.

“Motorists can renew their vehicle licence discs in the comfort of their homes or offices by using the website online.natis.gov.za. The renewed discs are delivered within three to five working days.”

Since the platform was introduced in 2022, more than six million vehicle licence discs have already been processed through the system. A new feature allows for online vehicle registration and change of ownership, primarily aimed at car dealers handling bulk transactions who require a fast and secure registration system.

According to Arrive Alive, clients of banks such as Capitec, First National Bank and Nedbank can access the service through their banking applications. In addition, motorists can use the platform to securely pay Aarto enforcement orders, which serve as a final notice issued when a driver fails to respond to a traffic violation notice and subsequent letter within the prescribed 32-day period.
