'The level of the PSL has to be higher' - Broos─── MORGAN PIEK 07:55 Tue, 06 Feb 2024
“I think it is the right moment to do that now, but again being in the semi-final is something very special for South African football.”
The Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos, has urged the Premier Soccer League to build on the nation’s teams’ success at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
Bafana will face Nigeria tomorrow in the semi-finals of Africa's biggest competition and they are confident of reaching the final.
South Africa are in the semi-finals for the first time in 2024 years.
Since take over at the national coach from Molefi Ntseki, Broos, has been drumming on raising the standard of the PSL in order to produce a stronger international team.
Broos has long stated that it's not healthy for the domestic scene to have one team in Mamelodi Sundowns dominating and winning year-after-year. It's imperative that the likes of Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, SuperSport United etc. return to their glory days and make the league a lot more competitive.
Broos who hasn’t had the best of relationships with the PSL said now the time is right to improve football on the domestic front.
“South African players are in the picture now and that means there will be more interest in South African football,” said Broos.
“I hope that those who saw the games are now convinced that the level of the PSL has to be higher - we have to work on that.
“I think it is the right moment to do that now, but again being in the semi-final is something very special for South African football.
“Let’s hope now that maybe we can cause a surprise again. Now there is a big hunger to play that final on Sunday.”
Wednesday night’s big AFCON semi-final between South Africa and Nigeria kicks off at 19:00, while at 22:00, Ivory Coast will take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in the second semi.
