Siwelele and Marumo go to battle for fans─── MORGAN PIEK 13:39 Thu, 09 Oct 2025

The two Premier Soccer League clubs, Siwelele FC and Marumo Gallants, are set to battle it out for bragging rights and fan pride this Sunday when they meet in another Bloemfontein derby in the Cufa Cup.
While it’s a FIFA international break for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the two clubs will square off in a festival match - their second meeting in less than a month. Unlike their recent PSL clash, however, this one is all about the supporters.
And, not just for the supporters of the two clubs, but for all fans, regardless of allegiance. In September, Siwelele claimed the first-ever derby victory, securing three points and the bragging rights at the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium.

Last year, Kaizer Chiefs were crowned the inaugural Cufa Cup champions after beating Marumo Gallants 4–2 on penalties, following a goalless draw in regulation time. The organisers have opted not to bring in a big team from outside the province this time, instead choosing to celebrate Bloemfontein’s football revival and the fact that the city now boasts two PSL clubs.
Over the past year and a half, football in Bloemfontein has been on a remarkable rise. The city hosted three FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where Bafana Bafana beat Zimbabwe 3–1, thrashed Lesotho 3–0, and drew 1–1 with Nigeria.
In addition, Siwelele’s arrival in the city was warmly welcomed by the Phunya Sele Sele faithful. Bloemfontein also hosted the 2025 COSAFA Cup, where Bafana reached the final before falling short to a strong Angola.
And to top it all off, the University of the Free State lifted the 2025 Varsity Football title last week. With all this momentum, Bloemfontein has truly re-established itself on South Africa’s football map.
Cufa Cup chairman, Ben Moseme, told OFM Sport that this weekend’s event is another opportunity to cement the city’s status as the country’s footballing hub. “That’s exactly what Siwelele Sama Sokolara has shown,” said Moseme.
“When the nation asks where to take a big game, Bloemfontein has become the obvious choice. That’s the strategy, we’re building on the passion and unity of the supporters who’ve made Bloemfontein a football city again.

“I always tell Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae that we don’t have the sea, we don’t have big mountains - it’s a little bit far, but there is one in Clarens - and we don’t have the Big Five. What we do have is sports and events tourism.
“So, in October, during Transport Month, let’s have everyone travel to Bloemfontein to celebrate our city’s growing football culture. We’re creating history and moving boundaries.
“We want Arsenal and Manchester United fans to come to Bloemfontein and experience what true football passion looks like, that’s Siwelele Sama Sokolara.”
Sunday’s derby between Siwelele FC and Marumo Gallants kicks off at 15:00 at the Toyota Stadium.
