Chelsea on the hunt for new coach after Maresca exit─── MORGAN PIEK 09:26 Fri, 02 Jan 2026
Chelsea have been thrown into fresh uncertainty after parting ways with head coach Enzo Maresca on Thursday, just 18 months into his stint at Stamford Bridge – a move that has sent shockwaves through English football.
The Italian tactician’s sudden departure comes with the Blues sitting fifth on the Premier League table, 15 points adrift of leaders and London rivals Arsenal. While the league position suggests a side still in the mix, performances on the pitch have told a different story in recent weeks.
Chelsea have endured a difficult run of form, managing just one win from their last seven outings, and it is understood that results – or the lack thereof – led to a breakdown in relations between Maresca and the club’s hierarchy. At a club where pressure is relentless and patience often in short supply, the warning lights were flashing.

On Thursday, Chelsea confirmed Maresca’s exit in an official statement, thanking him for his contribution during his time in west London. “During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup,” Chelsea FC said.
“Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club. With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
“We wish Enzo well for the future.”

Attention has now swiftly turned to who will take the reins at Stamford Bridge. While several high-profile names have been linked in recent days, Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior has emerged as the leading candidate. Chelsea are reportedly unlikely to pursue Oliver Glasner, Cesc Fàbregas, Andoni Iraola, or Roberto De Zerbi, with Rosenior now viewed as the frontrunner.
An announcement on the new head coach is expected within days.
Despite the off-field upheaval, Chelsea must quickly refocus, with a stern test awaiting them on Sunday night. The Blues travel to the Etihad Stadium to face second-placed Manchester City, with kick-off scheduled for 19:30 – a fixture that will offer little respite as the search for stability continues.
