The 2026 Football World Cup served up a day of surprises and stubborn resistance on Monday as four tightly contested matches in Groups G and H ended without a single winner emerging.

After the goal-laden drama of the previous matchday, fans were treated to a different kind of spectacle, one built on resilience, tactical discipline and teams refusing to give an inch. Remarkably, all four fixtures ended level, leaving both groups delicately poised heading into the second round of matches.

The day’s action got underway in Atlanta, where 2010 world champions Spain were held to a goalless draw by tournament newcomers Cape Verde. Few would have predicted the result before kick-off, but Cape Verde produced one of the defensive displays of the tournament so far.

Spain dominated possession and territory for long periods, but Cape Verde remained organised and composed under pressure. Every Spanish attack seemed to run into a wall of blue shirts, while the island nation carried enough threat on the counter-attack to keep the European giants honest. When the final whistle sounded, Cape Verde’s players celebrated as though they had won the match, and few could blame them.

The second match of the day took place in Seattle, where Belgium and Egypt shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw. The occasion carried added significance for Egypt’s talisman, Mohamed Salah, who celebrated his 34th birthday on one of football’s biggest stages.

Both sides created opportunities in a fast-paced encounter that swung from end to end. Belgium’s experienced squad showed flashes of their attacking quality, while Egypt demonstrated once again why they remain one of Africa’s most dangerous teams. In the end, neither side could find a decisive breakthrough, leaving Group G wide open.

The drama continued in Miami, where Saudi Arabia earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against two-time world champions Uruguay. The South Americans entered the tournament as favourites to progress from Group H, but Saudi Arabia had other ideas.

Displaying tremendous discipline and work rate, the Saudis matched Uruguay’s intensity throughout the contest. The result will feel like a victory for Saudi Arabia and serves as another reminder that there are no easy matches at a World Cup.

The final fixture of the evening produced the highest-scoring game of the day. Iran and New Zealand played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in Los Angeles, with both sides showing attacking ambition from the opening whistle.

Momentum shifted repeatedly as the teams’ traded goals and chances, but neither could find the winner in a pulsating encounter that kept supporters on the edge of their seats.

With all four matches ending level, Groups G and H remain perfectly balanced. Every team still has everything to play for as the race for the knockout stages begins to intensify.

Attention now turns to Tuesday's fixtures, where another pair of football heavyweights finally enter the tournament.

France’s clash against Senegal is undoubtedly the headline attraction with kick-off at 18:00. The 2018 world champions are among the favourites to lift the trophy, but Senegal possess the pace, power and quality to trouble any opponent.

The reigning world champions, Argentina, also begin their campaign in the early hours of Wednesday morning against Algeria with kick-off at 03:00, while Norway will be eager to make a strong start against Iraq at midnight. At 06:00 on Wednesday morning, Austria will be up against Jordan.
