The Springboks and SA ‘A’ squad are embracing the challenge that lies ahead as preparations continue for Saturday’s double-header in Gqeberha.

Assistant coach Deon Davids and uncapped loose-forward Paul de Villiers both expressed confidence and excitement about the week ahead.

On Monday, Davids said the camp had built good momentum over the past week and the coaching staff were pleased with the progress being made as they moved closer to match day.

According to Davids, the blend of experienced internationals and younger players has contributed positively to the environment within the squad.

“The energy in camp has been excellent,” he said. “We’ve seen a smooth transition from the alignment camps into this training environment. The younger players have settled in well alongside the more experienced members of the group, and everyone understands what is expected of them.

“The players have connected well and have worked hard together, so we’re looking forward to taking the next step this week.”

For De Villiers, who captained the Junior Springboks earlier in his career, the opportunity to be involved in the national set-up has been a valuable learning experience.

The loose forward admitted his first week in camp had exceeded expectations and he was making the most of every opportunity to learn from the players and coaches around him.

“It’s been an incredible experience so far,” said De Villiers. “The quality of players around me is outstanding, and there is always something to learn. The coaches have also been fantastic in helping us improve and understand what is required at this level.”

He identified the intensity of training as one of the biggest differences between provincial rugby and the Springbok environment.

“Every training session is highly competitive because you’re surrounded by players who have represented South Africa and want to remain in this squad. The standards are exceptionally high.”

The squad will remain in Johannesburg until Wednesday before travelling to Gqeberha later in the week. Davids explained the decision was based on continuity and ensuring the players could complete the bulk of their preparation in familiar surroundings before shifting focus to match week activities at the coast.

The assistant coach will also have responsibilities with both the Springbok and SA ‘A’ teams this weekend, something he believes has been made easier through a consistent approach across both groups.

“We’ve worked hard to ensure alignment in our planning and structures. That consistency has allowed both squads to prepare effectively, and we believe we’re in a good place heading into the matches.”

Davids expects both opponents to provide stern tests. He highlighted the Barbarians’ tradition of selecting world-class players and playing an entertaining brand of rugby, while also praising Zimbabwe’s recent growth.

“Zimbabwe have developed into a strong side and qualifying for the 2027 Rugby World Cup is evidence of that. They have quality players and coaching staff, which makes this a worthwhile challenge for everyone involved.”

De Villiers admitted he was feeling a combination of excitement and nerves ahead of the weekend but said his focus remains firmly on performing when given the opportunity.

Meanwhile, Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus and SA ‘A’ coach Mzwandile Stick are expected to name their respective match-day squads on Tuesday.

Saturday’s SA ‘A’ game against Zimbabwe at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium will kick-off at 12:00, while the Springboks match against the Barbarians will kick-off at 15:00.
