England survive DR Congo scare as Belgium and USA march on─── MORGAN PIEK 07:28 Thu, 02 Jul 2026
There were no major upsets at the 2026 Football World Cup on Wednesday, but the favourites certainly had to earn their places in the Round of 16 as England, Belgium and the United States all came through entertaining knockout on Wednesday.
England were pushed to the limit by a fearless Democratic Republic of Congo before grinding out a dramatic 2-1 victory in Atlanta. DR Congo stunned the Three Lions with an early goal and looked capable of producing one of the biggest shocks of the tournament. However, when England needed inspiration, captain Harry Kane once again delivered. The prolific striker struck twice late in the second half to complete the comeback and book a blockbuster Round of 16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico.
Belgium also survived a major scare in Seattle, edging Senegal 3-2 in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament. The Red Devils were forced to dig deep against a fearless Senegal side that refused to back down, with both teams creating plenty of chances in an end-to-end spectacle. Belgium's composure and experience ultimately proved decisive as they secured their place in the last 16, where they will face the United States.
The Americans completed the day's action with a convincing 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in San Francisco, despite playing much of the match with 10 men. Backed by a passionate home crowd, the USA produced a disciplined and mature performance, controlling possession and limiting their opponents' opportunities before sealing an impressive win. Their reward is a mouth-watering Round of 16 showdown with Belgium.
Earlier in the day, Mexico became the first nation to advance after a clinical 2-0 victory over Ecuador in Mexico City. The hosts now face a massive test against England in what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the Round of 16.
Attention now shifts to another fascinating day of Round of 32 action, with the remaining places in the last 16 still up for grabs.
The USA clinched only their second-ever knockout stage victory at a Football World Cup - FIFA
The headline clash sees the 2010 world champions, Spain, take on Austria in Los Angeles, California. Spain have been among the most impressive teams at the tournament and will start as favourites, but Austria have already shown they possess the quality and resilience to trouble the world's elite.
Later, Portugal and Croatia renew their long-standing European rivalry in Toronto. Both sides are packed with world-class talent and tournament experience, making this one of the toughest fixtures to call. With a place in the last 16 on the line, the smallest of margins could decide the outcome.
The day's final encounter takes place in Vancouver, where Switzerland meet Algeria. Switzerland will rely on their wealth of major tournament experience, while Algeria will be determined to extend their impressive campaign and spring another memorable World Cup surprise.
With the knockout stages gathering momentum, the margin for error has disappeared. Every match is now a winner-takes-all battle, and with the stakes higher than ever, the drama is only set to intensify.
