France kept their hopes of lifting another Football World Cup title alive on Thursday night after beating Morocco 2–0 in their highly anticipated quarter-final clash in Boston.

The match in Massachusetts was a repeat of the 2022 semi-final in Qatar, where Les Bleus also ended the Atlas Lions’ remarkable run. Once again, France proved to have the big-match temperament as they booked their place in the final four.

Morocco, who made history four years ago by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, entered the contest full of confidence after another outstanding tournament. They had already knocked out the Netherlands and co-hosts Canada on their way to the last eight, but France’s quality and composure proved a bridge too far.

Les Bleus started strongly and put Morocco under pressure from the opening exchanges. Their attacking flair, combined with a disciplined defensive performance, made life difficult for the North Africans, who struggled to find the space and rhythm that had carried them so far in the tournament.

France’s clinical finishing was ultimately the difference, while their defence stood firm whenever Morocco threatened. The Atlas Lions showed their trademark fighting spirit and continued to push until the final whistle, but they were unable to find a way past the French backline.

The victory means France have now reached three consecutive World Cup semi-finals, having won the tournament in Russia in 2018 before finishing as runners-up to Argentina in Qatar in 2022. Their consistency on football’s biggest stage has once again highlighted their incredible depth and winning culture.

For Morocco, the defeat brings an end to another memorable campaign. While they fell short of matching their historic achievement from 2022, their performances once again proved that African football can compete with the very best nations in the world.

France will now turn their attention to their semi-final, where they will face the winner of the quarter-final between Spain and Belgium.

The second quarter-final will take centre stage on Friday when Spain and Belgium meet in Los Angeles.

The 2010 champions in South Africa, Spain head into the match as one of the tournament favourites after producing some impressive football throughout the competition. Their possession-based approach and exciting young talent have made them one of the teams to beat.

Belgium, however, have quietly built momentum and will be determined to continue their push for a first-ever World Cup crown. The Red Devils have shown plenty of attacking quality and will be eager to upset the former champions. They proved against the USA just how dangerous they are – they rock up for the game and they are motivated.

The remaining two quarter-finals will be played on Saturday, as Norway will face England in Miami, Florida, before defending champions Argentina take on Switzerland in Kansas City, Missouri.
