Norway and England booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Football World Cup on Sunday after two thrilling Round of 16 encounters delivered drama, goals, and heartbreak.

The biggest surprise came in New York, where Norway stunned five-time world champions Brazil with a 2-1 victory to continue their remarkable run at the tournament. The Norwegians showed tremendous discipline and belief against one of the tournament favourites, absorbing pressure while taking their opportunities when they arrived.

Brazil, who had entered the knockout stages with high expectations, enjoyed long spells of possession and created several promising chances, but they were punished by a well-organised Norwegian outfit that refused to be intimidated by their opponents’ history and reputation.

The result brought an end to another disappointing World Cup campaign for the South Americans, while Norway’s dream journey continued as they secured a place among the final eight teams in the competition.

Later in the day, England survived a major scare against co-hosts Mexico in a five-goal thriller in Mexico City, with the Three Lions edging their way into the quarter-finals with a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Playing in front of a passionate crowd, Mexico produced a brave performance and pushed England all the way. The hosts showed their attacking quality and fighting spirit, but England’s experience in the big moments proved to be the difference.

The English had to dig deep as Mexico threatened to cause an upset, but a composed finish in the closing stages ensured England remained on course in their pursuit of a first World Cup title since 1966.

The result also ended Mexico’s campaign on home soil, but their performances throughout the tournament earned plenty of respect from supporters and opponents alike.

England will now turn their attention to a fascinating quarter-final battle against Norway, with both teams entering the clash full of confidence following impressive knockout victories.

The Round of 16 action continues on Monday with two mouth-watering fixtures that could have a major impact on the title race.

One of the standout matches of the tournament so far will see European heavyweights Portugal and Spain renew their rivalry in Dallas at 21:00.

This match is certainly worthy of a World Cup final, and there is no doubt that it will deliver. The all-European showdown promises plenty of quality, with both nations boasting world-class players and a history of producing memorable encounters on the biggest stage.

The 2010 champions in South Africa, Spain, head into the clash looking to continue their impressive form, while Portugal will be eager to show that they have the depth and experience required to challenge for the trophy.

The second match of the day will see co-hosts the United States face Belgium in Seattle in another intriguing Round of 16 clash, which has already been marked with controversy.

Backed by their home supporters, the Americans will be determined to keep their World Cup dream alive, but they face a Belgian side packed with quality and experience.

While the Red Devils have flown under the radar, they have shown their attacking ability throughout the tournament, while the United States will look to use their energy, organisation, and home advantage to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

This game in Seattle will kick off at 02:00 on Wednesday.
