Mbappé and Yamal ready to light up World Cup semi-final─── MORGAN PIEK 07:56 Tue, 14 Jul 2026
France and Spain will lock horns in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of the 2026 Football World Cup when they face off in the first semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday night.
With a place in Sunday’s final at stake, two of Europe’s football giants are set for another chapter in a growing rivalry.
Both nations have been among the standout performers at this year’s tournament. France are aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup final under veteran coach Didier Deschamps, while Spain are looking to continue the momentum they have built since winning the UEFA European Championship in 2024 under Luis de la Fuente.

Les Bleus have looked every bit like title contenders throughout the tournament. They booked their place in the last four with convincing victories over Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco. Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, France have struck the perfect balance between defensive solidity and attacking flair, conceding only two goals while proving clinical in front of goal.
Spain’s journey has been just as impressive. Victories over Austria, Portugal and Belgium have highlighted the quality and depth of La Roja’s squad. Their midfield trio of Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo has dictated the tempo in most matches, while teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has continued to showcase why he is regarded as one of world football’s brightest young stars.
Recent history also adds another layer of intrigue to the contest. Spain have enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture over the past few years, knocking France out in the Euro 2024 semi-finals before edging them 5-4 in an unforgettable UEFA Nations Leagues semi-final last year. France, however, can draw confidence from their only previous World Cup meeting, when they defeated Spain 3-1 in the round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Deschamps insists his side are not driven by thoughts of revenge despite those recent defeats.
“It’s not about revenge. This is a World Cup semi-final. Spain are favourites because of what they’ve shown, but we’re here because we’ve earned it too,” said the France coach.

French midfielder Warren Zaïre-Emery admitted the Euro 2024 defeat still stings.
“We’re ready to get revenge for the Euros. We’ve changed a lot since then and we believe in this group.”
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente is expecting another closely contested tactical battle but is confident his players are ready for the challenge.
“The French are in great form and we have different playing styles. We have the greatest respect for our opponents, but we feel capable of beating any team,” he said.
De la Fuente also believes Yamal is destined for another memorable performance.
“Lamine’s great World Cup day is still to come. He must enjoy the occasion because opportunities like this don’t come around often.”
From a tactical perspective, the semi-final offers an intriguing contrast in styles. France will look to use the blistering pace of Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise on the counter-attack, while Spain are expected to dominate possession and patiently probe for openings with their slick passing game.
The winners will secure their place in Sunday’s final, where either England or defending champions, Argentina await.
Tuesday semi-final in Dallas will kick-off at 21:00.
