Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka has sent South Africa’s Kevin Anderson crashing out of the US Open at Flushing Meadows in the quarter-finals.

The French Open champion levelled the head-to-head battle between the two players at four matches a piece with a straight sets victory over the big serving South African.

Wawrinka breezed into the semi-finals will a 6-4, 6-4 and 6-0 win.

Following their match, Anderson said that nerves maybe got the better of him.

"Yeah, it was really tough out there. Was maybe a little bit nervous just with the occasion and a lot of waiting around, switching courts. Obviously something that you deal with, but just getting out there and everything seemed to be going pretty quickly.

"I thought conditions were, you know, quite quick and quite live, especially compared to my last match out there. One poor serve game in the first set and I wasn't really making too many inroads on his serve.

"I thought I sort of got it back a little bit in the start of the second set. Another poor serve game, and then things sort of went downhill a little bit.

"After  changing my clothes and having that bathroom break, I was just trying to compose myself and reset myself. I didn't feel, you know, that out of sorts, but going back it sort of snowballed a little bit.

"He started free flying, swinging, and I was trying to find my way a little bit. Obviously it was not a good one to be in."

World number one, Novak Djokovic will face defending champion, Marin Cilic of Croatia in the first semi-final with the Serbian beating Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6.

Cilic in in his turned knocked Jo-Wilfred Tsonga on in a grueling five-setter which ended 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 and 6-4.

The second semi-final will be an all Swiss affair with Wawrinka facing his compatriot and 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer in the last four.

The Fed Express dispatched Richard Gasquet of France with a 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1 win.

In the women’s singles Flavia Penetta claimed a shock 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4 win over Petra Kvitova and Romania’s Simona Halep knocked Victoria Azarenka out with a 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4 win.
