Historical Events:

• 1856: The town of Boshof is established in the Free State.
• 1897: The Sultan of Zanzibar abolishes slavery.
• 1902: Caspar (Casper?) Kruger, the son of Paul Kruger (ex-president of the Transvaal), takes the oath of allegiance to Britain.
• 1936: The house of Paul Kruger in Church Street West is declared a national monument. At the death of mrs Kruger it was used as police barracks and after that the old 'Moedersbond" (a maternity hospital) was started there.
• 1951: Dr Robert Broom (84), archaeologist and discoverer of 'Mrs Ples', dies in Pretoria.
• 1965: The International Court of Justice at The Hague hears the arguments of Ethiopia and Liberia in the South West Africa cases presented by E.A. Gross of the New York Bar.
• 1995: The first genocide trials begin in Kigali, Rwanda, against some of the 30 000 majority Hutus accused of killing Tutsis.

Arts, Music, TV:

• 1926: A.J. Werth, former editor of Die Volksblad, Bloemfontein, is appointed Administrator of South West Africa (Namibia).
• 1955: Clarabelle van Niekerk, SA singer, is born.
• Men account for 74.4% of lead roles in Hollywood movies.
• All characters in the cartoon sitcom “The Simpsons” are based on, and named after his creator Matt Groening’s family


Sports:

• 1984: Zola Budd (17), South African athlete, receives British citizenship only thirteen days after application, to enable her to compete in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
• 1997: Bafana Bafana, the SA soccer team, loses 0-2 against Congo in an away game.
• A 20-month-old baby became the youngest professional soccer player ever, after being signed up by a Belgian club.
• Famous soccer player Mario Balotelli is an Italian, born to immigrants from Ghana, raised by a Jewish mother.
