A man in his sixties is in a critical condition after plunging two metres down an elevator shaft on Thursday at a mall in Bloemfontein’s city centre.
Personnel at the unnamed mall confirm it was a maintenance man who fell down the shaft while servicing equipment, not a customer. ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring tells OFM News when paramedics arrived at the mall at around 11:00 in the morning, they found the man lying in the shaft with head and leg injuries.
He says medics climbed into the elevator shaft to assess the man’s condition. “The man was treated for his injuries and provided with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, Provincial Fire Services assisted paramedics in lifting the patient from the elevator shaft. The man was thereafter transported to Mediclinic Bloemfontein for further treatment. The details surrounding this incident are not yet known,” concludes Meiring.
Mall management is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident today.
