#CrimeStats: Central SA sees an overall decline in murder rate | News Article

Central South Africa saw a significant decline in the murder rate over the 2018/19 financial year, despite, the national murder rate having had risen by 3,4%.

This was revealed by head of police crime research and statistics, Norman Sekhukhune, who along with police minister Bheki Cele and national police commissioner, Khehla Sitole presented the country's crime statistics to Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee on Thursday.

The murder rate in the Free State and Northern Cape declined by more than 5%, while the North West’s murder rate increased by 1,2%. He says they have noticed a large number of murders occur over weekends.

He says 70% of the murders committed occurred over the weekend, which indicates there is an abuse of alcohol or drugs involved in this particular crime.

The weapons most used in murders is guns, knives and sharp objects.
