60 FS vehicle testing stations unable to test roadworthiness of trucks | News Article

Bloemfontein - Sixty vehicle testing stations across the Free State are currently unable to test the roadworthiness of trucks.

This is according to MEC of Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Khompela.

Only the Harrismith and Ladybrand testing stations meet the minimum requirements for testing heavy vehicles.

The Democratic Alliance's Leona Kleynhans says thousands of trucks are registered across the province and it's a challenge to meet the annual roadworthy tests.

Kleynhans says it's impractical to only have two functional stations and all this has a serious impact on the licensing of trucks. She says dysfunctional testing stations coupled with the poor state of roads have a negative and compounding effect on our struggling economy.

The department meanwhile says it is in the process of finalising the tender process and has welcomed the announcement of a contractor who will revamp Free State testing stations.
