Refined foods may increase chances of depression─── THANDI XABA 11:56 Tue, 11 Aug 2015
Bloemfontein - An international study has shown that hormonal changes caused by refined foods could reduce sugar levels and prompt symptoms of depression.
Research reveals that refined foods like white bread and rice could increase the risk of depression in older women.
Bloemfontein dietician Liesel van Zyl says people should understand the kind of relationship they have with food and strive to maintain a balanced diet.
Van Zyl meanwhile says that whole grain foods, roughage and vegetables could reduce the occurrence of mental illness.
The study, which included data from more than 70 000 post-menopausal women, found a link between refined carbohydrate consumption and depression.
