The “rain room”, on display at a London-based art studio, is an indoor downpour that recognises people’s presence and makes adjustments to keep them dry.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, the temporary exhibit is being held in a parking lot next to MoMA on West 54th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

The 1,000-square-foot rain shower transforms into a stage for impromptu performances as guest test how well the rainfall reacts to their movements as waves of people, ten at a time are invited in.

The three founders of the London-based art studio Random International are Stuart Wood, Florian Ortkrass, and Hannes Koch, who have more than considered what it would be like if they could control the weather before they started this project.

To keep track of the people in the area and regulate which of the ceiling’s water sprouts are on and which are off at any given moment Random international 3D cameras are installed.  Every minute, almost 220 gallons of water fall; the water is then filtered and continually circulated.

It is said that rainbows are created when a spotlight, placed on the side of the room shines through the staccato dashes of pressurized water.  The downpour. According to the designers, is static noise coming from within, that drowns outside noises and creates a meditative environment.

Rain Room’s first successful run was at Barbaric Centre in London and became a popular attraction.
