“The exhibition highlights the gallery’s commitment to artistic dialogue, diversity, and creativity.”
Mid-morning Magic’s Yolanda Maartens speaks to Chief Curator at the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley, Chepape Mokgato, about what art enthusiasts can expect at this exhibition.
Reflections – “Art Writer’s Interpretation of WHAG’s Collection”, is co-curated by Khumo Mcumu and Karabo Tshenyego with Chepape Makgato’s guidance, and offers a fresh narrative on the William Humphreys Art Gallery’s collection. Featuring renowned artists like David Koloane and emerging talents such as Nompumelelo Tshabalala, the exhibition highlights the gallery’s commitment to artistic dialogue, diversity, and creativity.
It marks 30 years of democratic South African art, reflecting on its socio-political journey and future evolution. With contributions from experts like Sean O’Toole, Dr Wayne Florence, and Percy Mabandu, the exhibition also underscores the influence of veteran artists and their educational contributions.

This exhibition is part of a double bill not only commemorating three decades of democratic expression in South African art but also anticipating its future evolution. It serves as a testament to the William Humphreys Art Gallery’s dedication to promoting artistic dialogue, celebrating diversity, and fostering creativity in the heart of Kimberley.
The exhibition is on at the WHAG in Kimberley until the end of August 2024.
