From Paris to Kimberley, Bulumko Mbete’s art starts conversations around the world─── 08:49 Tue, 12 Aug 2025

Bulumko Mbete, the 2023 Absa L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award winner, is bringing her solo exhibition Like The Sky I’ve Been Too Quiet to the William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley.
She joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to reflect on her recent residency in Paris and what it means to express herself and her story through art.
Like The Sky I’ve Been Too Quiet by Bulumko Mbete is an exhibition that showcases a unique multimedia installation that includes terracotta tiles, textiles, and a dynamic sound installation co-created with artist Kamil Hassim.
This immersive setup transports visitors into a dreamlike exploration of land ownership, political activism, and migratory practices, all framed within the context of Mbete’s grandfather’s experiences during the early democratic era in South Africa.
Details about the event can be found at whag.co.za and you can follow Bulumko Mbete on Instagram for updates.
