Free State Youth Orchestra believes in music for all ages─── 09:00 Tue, 05 May 2026
Joining Yolanda Maartens in the studio for the OFM Art Beat are conductor Dingaan Chabalala, 2nd French horn Khanya Mbenyana and 1st violin Neo Motseki. They are excited to share details about the Free State Youth Orchestra concert on 31 May.
The Free State Youth Orchestra (FSYO) continues to play a vital role in shaping the next generation of South African musicians. As a key component of the Free State Symphony Orchestra Company, the FSYO serves as a feeder orchestra, nurturing young talent and preparing them for professional musical careers.
Closely linked to the Odeion School of Music in Bloemfontein, the orchestra brings together senior school learners and university students who share a passion for orchestral performance and artistic excellence.
Audiences can expect an inspiring showcase of dedication, discipline, and musical growth when the FSYO takes to the stage. The orchestra not only develops technical skill but also fosters collaboration, confidence, and a deep appreciation for music across genres.
This upcoming concert promises to highlight the remarkable progress and commitment of these young musicians as they present a dynamic and engaging programme.
Under the baton of Chabalala, the orchestra will deliver a rich blend of classical masterworks and contemporary favourites.
The programme includes Rossano Galante’s Genesis, selections from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite, Tchaikovsky’s beloved Romeo and Juliet Overture, and Gustav Holst’s majestic “Jupiter” from The Planets. Audiences will also be treated to orchestral arrangements of popular hits such as Adele’s Skyfall, Toto’s Africa, Coldplay’s A Sky Full of Stars, “Circle of Life” from The Lion King, “He’s a Pirate” from Pirates of the Caribbean, and Pharrell Williams’ upbeat Happy.

The FSYO will be holding a concert on 31 May.
This diverse repertoire ensures there is something for everyone – whether you are drawn to the sweeping emotion of classical compositions or the familiar energy of contemporary music. The concert is a celebration of versatility, bridging musical worlds and appealing to a broad audience.
