Visual art will take centre stage at Aardklop 2026, with Cornerstone serving as this year’s visual arts theme. Curated by Sheryl Msomi, the programme runs from 29 September to 3 October and brings together artists, studios and collectives from across South Africa in a celebration of the foundations of artistic practice.

Inspired by the idea of a cornerstone – a symbol of beginnings, strength and permanence – the theme explores traditional art-making practices as important systems of learning, mentorship and creative expression. At the same time, Cornerstone highlights the ways in which these foundations continue to inform contemporary artists and new creative ideas.

The NWU Potchefstroom campus and The Roots Venue will become spaces where tradition and experimentation meet. Seven exhibitions form part of the programme, showcasing a range of artists and collectives exploring different visual languages and perspectives.

The programme also includes workshops, such as the children’s art programme, Young Eyes, Bold Art!, facilitated by the NWU Gallery, as well as an Open Studio Tufting Workshop facilitated by Fybre Studio.

Free walkabouts will be offered daily, with the visual arts programme forming part of a collaborative effort between Aardklop 2026 and the NWU Gallery.
