The Free State MEC for Cooperative Governance (Cogta), Thembeni Nxangisa, has vowed to take drastic actions to address pertinent issues affecting service delivery issues such as waste refuse collection and water supply.

Nxangisa alleges that municipal workers opt to not collect waste refuse during normal working hours but instead choose to collect the refuse after hours with the intention of claiming overtime money. He says Mangaung is dirty and recently some residents did not have running water. He adds that there are several issues within the municipality, which is under administration, but adds that they are responding to them. His statement comes after irate residents in the metro voiced their concerns and frustrations over the water-shedding and the collection of waste refuse, amongst others.

On Thursday, the DA and residents of Roodewal in Bloemfontein opened a criminal case against the municipality relating to raw sewage spillages, amongst others. The ward 47 residents, alongside the DA councillor, Mokgadi Kganakga, accuses the municipality of pumping sewage into the Renosterspruit. They further accuse the metro of failing to complete the construction of the sewerage plant at Roodewal.

Meanwhile, the municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says the problem was caused by spillages along the M10.  “We have a problem with abattoirs and butcheries that discharge foreign waste which blocks the sewerage system. We had a meeting with all of them, together with social services, and after that there has not been any major spillage in the area," Khedama added.

Nxangisa, who also acts as the MEC for Health, briefed the media at Bophelo House in Bloemfontein on Friday regarding the Coronavirus (Covid-19). He was addressing concerns that there could be a second wave of Covid-19 infections in the Free State.
