Construction at yet another North West school is set to resume after months of delays, as the Department of Education reaffirms its commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges and enhancing learning conditions across the province.

The project at Sediko Primary School in Jouberton, Klerksdorp, reached 90% completion before coming to a halt due to significant contractual issues. These were primarily linked to change management complications, which threatened the continuation of the project.

The stalled work includes crucial renovations such as improved classrooms, a science laboratory, a media centre, new ablution facilities, a dedicated block for Grade R learners, and an additional classroom block.

“The construction project halted at 90%, and it will only take four months to complete the remaining work as the matter was resolved and the contractor is back on site, actively preparing to resume in full-scale construction activities,” said North West Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.

However, due to the prolonged pause in construction, the previous construction work permit had expired. Molokwane said under legal and safety regulations, the Department of Labour must reissue the permit before full-scale building activity can resume.

Education MEC Viola Motsumi appealed for cooperation from the community during this critical phase, particularly during the upcoming examination period.

“I would like to appeal to the community of Jouberton to allow examinations to unfold smoothly without any challenges. Also, to assure our parents and learners that the contractor will resume the construction project. Currently, the construction staff is busy preparing for the construction project to resume.

“They are removing all the unwanted materials from the construction site while awaiting the approval of the construction work permit from the Department of Labour. As a department, we are fully aware of the inconvenience caused by the delay in completing the project,” Motsumi stated.

Molokwane added that once the work permit is approved, the project is expected to be finalised within four months, bringing long-awaited relief to the school community.
