NW Finance MEC sworn in as acting premier | News Article

The North West Finance MEC, Motlalepula Rosho, is now the acting premier of the embattled province.

This comes as Job Mokgoro announced his resignation as the head of the North West during a virtual media briefing on Thursday 26 August.

Rosho was appointed as the acting premier in a special sitting of the province’s Executive Council on Thursday afternoon. Following her designation, the Finance MEC, was sworn in.

Mokgoro announced his resignation following his meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa, which reportedly left him without a choice but to step down. The 73-year-old ascended to the role of premier following the resignation of Supra Mahumapelo on the back of unrest in Mahikeng in 2018.

The North West’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) removed Mokgoro from the position in August over his alleged failure to implement party instructions. IPC Coordinator, Hlomane Chauke, told media that it was decided that Mokgoro’s removal is in the best interest of the people of the province. The ousting was, however, in the works for some time.

On 31 January 2021, the same IPC temporarily suspended Mokgoro and three other members from the party due to them voting with the opposition, effectively going against the “party manadate” in the Provincial Legislature. The IPC said in turn that they would monitor Job Mokgoro’s decisions moving forward and will intervene on major decisions made to ensure he does comply with the “party mandate”. Mokgoro maintained at the time that he is only answerable to Luthuli House – the ANC’s headquarters in Johannesburg.

In July 2021 rumours surfaced on social media that the 73-year-old had stepped down from his position. The rumours surfaced a day after City Press published an article on Sunday 4 June, alleging the ANC National Working Committee had gotten the ball rolling in axing Mokgoro from the role.
