The Northern Cape province is rolling up its sleeves to promote domestic travel.

With the month of September commonly known as Tourism Month, there's a hive of activities in the Northern Cape to lure travellers. From the Kalahari to the Karoo and the Namakwaland, tourism is being promoted as an industry that could boost the province's economy and might address the rising unemployment. Its official unemployment rate is standing at 28.1% and expanded unemployment at 50.3%.

According to the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey released by the Statistician-General, Risenga Maluleke, the tourism industry is amongst those that have shed jobs and is severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

OFM News' Katleho Morapela reports from Springbok in the Northern Cape that the province is, however, optimistic that promoting domestic travel will bring about the much-needed relief.

The province, neighbouring the Free State and the North West, boosts itself as a tourist attraction destination that is not only geographically larger than the rest of the other provinces, but is one that offers diverse cultural experiences, adventure, and extreme sports activities.

OFM News just weeks ago reported on how South Africa's youngest Olympian to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 finals came from the city of Kimberley.

The 15-year-old Boipelo Awuah, unfortunately, had to take an earlier flight back to the diamond city following an injury. The provincial MEC for Finance, Economic Development, and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, however, said the province takes pride in Boipelo and would be investing greater efforts into promoting extreme sports and tourism in the province.
