A Northern Cape police officer has been applauded following a successful conviction in a rape case.
The Provincial Head of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Nicky Mills, hailed Sergeant Marlon Eksteen after a diligent investigation that led to the conviction of Klaas Beukes.
According to the Northern Cape police spokesperson, Olebogeng Tawana, the 32-year-old was found guilty and handed down eight years imprisonment in the Carnarvon Regional Court on Monday. He says Beukes pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted rape.
Tawana says during the court proceedings, it was revealed that on 12 December 2020, the victim was sleeping when the perpetrator entered her home and attempted to undress her. He says the victim’s husband caught Beukes in the crime. He says the accused escaped and was later arrested. Tawana further adds that the accused was denied bail and remained in police custody until his court appearance and sentencing.
