Eight arrested; search continues for other ATM bomb suspects | News Article

The Free State police have arrested eight suspects following a multi-disciplinary operation after the attempted murder, ATM bombing and robbery in Bloemfontein over the weekend.

OFM News reported 15 suspects were on the run the weekend after bombing an ATM at a fuel station and fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, early Saturday morning.

A man (30) was shot in his upper abdomen and left hand at this fuel station in the East End industrial area.

Police spokesperson Thabo Covane said an armed response company's security officer was also shot in the stomach. Both victims were rushed to a local hospital. No update has been provided on the victims yet.

A case involving the ATM bombing, robbery and attempted murders was opened and a manhunt was launched for the gun-wielding suspects whilst investigations were initiated.

"Intelligence-led information was operationalised and it led the team to the Namibia section in Mangaung where eight male suspects aged between 25 and 40 were arrested and the getaway vehicle, a Kia with GP registration numbers, was found.  Two unlicensed firearms with live ammunition were also found hidden in the vehicle.  The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday 17 April 2023 for attempted murder and the ATM bombing," Covane added.

A search for more suspects continues.
