“You’ve got men and women, children who go to bed hungry when we could have done better.”

The Free State Premier says the arrogance of those in senior positions has for years been a barrier to progress in the province.

In a recent meeting with senior and middle managers of the Free State province held in Bloemfontein, Mxolisi Dukwana spoke frankly about a long-standing issue plaguing the province mainly due to the arrogance of government and municipal managers.

Dukwana highlighted a systemic problem that has hindered progress and perpetuated suffering among the province’s residents.

He pointed out how managers have exploited their positions without facing any repercussions, neglecting their duty to serve the community effectively. His vivid description of people going to bed hungry while resources remain untapped underscored the disconnect between those in power and those they’re meant to serve.

“The people we are serving are suffering. You’ve got men and women, children who go to bed hungry when we could have done better. When we’ve got everything that can change the situation.

“Imagine a lady trying to flush a toilet and everything comes out because one of our own – a leader, a professional engineer – did not do his or her job well and signed off on a job that was not well done but still earns a salary. Nothing happens to him or her,” he lashed out.

Dukwana emphasised the urgency for managers to prioritise service delivery and economic growth in the province. This is after a reminder that arrogance has no place in leadership, especially at the expense of the populace’s well-being.

He stressed the importance of accountability and the ethical imperative to leave the environment in a better state than it was found.

Dukwana also implored managers to honour their commitment to serve the people, recognising that their actions directly impact the province’s well-being.
