“The building of the structure at Lemo Green Park and the event has brought some substantial employment and business opportunities to Mangaung residents, especially young people.”

Mangaung residents are set to enjoy a world-class experience with the unveiling of the first-ever dome venue inside a township, thanks to the efforts of Free State business mogul Freddie Kenney.

The multi-billionaire and founder of Kenworth Group has fulfilled his promise of building a premier entertainment venue in the heart of Mangaung, while also making significant strides in boosting the local economy and addressing job creation.

Kenney, who had previously stated that the second edition of the Lemo Fest would cost over R50 million, has ensured that he continues with his ambitious project which creates lasting benefits for the community. The journey to this milestone was not without hurdles after a legal dispute over venue rights threatened to derail the 2024 Lemo Fest, with attempts to prevent the festival from proceeding due to concerns over the infrastructure built at Green Park. However, just a week before the event, the Bloemfontein High Court ruled in favour of Kenney, dismissing an urgent interdict seeking to demolish the festival infrastructure.

On Thursday (3/10), Kenney officially launched the highly anticipated Lemo Fest, ensuring that key stakeholders, including the media and local artists, had a preview of the festival’s offerings. The event kicks off Friday afternoon (4/10) with the Afro Globe showcase, expected to draw an audience of 7,000 attendees. The festival will continue through the weekend, featuring Yanos on Saturday and a gospel event on Sunday.

More than 300 jobs have been created since the commencement of the construction and planning phases for the dome and the Lemo Fest. In addition, local businesses are expected to benefit from the stalls set up outside the Dome, offering further economic opportunities. Kenney has also prioritised security for the venue, promising attendees a safe environment, including secure parking facilities located at the nearby Lemo Mall.

Free State premier, Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae, has lent her support to local events like Lemo Fest, emphasising that festivals are a vital tool for unlocking the province’s full economic potential. “These events not only entertain but provide crucial platforms for business development and community upliftment, contributing significantly to the cultural and tourism sectors,” she said.
