Osaka stuns Sabalenka to reach Wimbledon quarter-finals─── MORGAN PIEK 07:42 Mon, 06 Jul 2026
Naomi Osaka produced a major upset at Wimbledon on Sunday as she stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka to book her place in the quarter-finals at the All England Club in London.
The Japanese star, a four-time Grand Slam champion, rolled back the years with a powerful and composed display on Centre Court, beating the Belarusian top seed and tournament favourite 6-2, 7-6 in the pick of the fourth-round action.
Osaka, who has battled for consistency since returning to the tour following the birth of her daughter, showed glimpses of the player who once dominated the women’s game.
Her trademark power from the baseline was on full display as she matched and often outplayed Sabalenka in the heavy-hitting exchanges.
The opening set belonged entirely to Osaka as she took control early, putting pressure on Sabalenka’s serve and forcing the world number one into uncharacteristic errors. The second set proved to be a much tighter battle, with Sabalenka showing the fighting spirit that has made her one of the most feared players on the WTA Tour.
However, when the match went to a tie-break, Osaka lifted her game once again, keeping calm under pressure to seal one of her biggest wins in recent years.
The victory saw Osaka reach her first Wimbledon quarter-final, while also ending Sabalenka’s hopes of capturing a maiden title at SW19.
Elsewhere at Wimbledon, the action continued to deliver plenty of excitement as the tournament entered its second week.
In the women’s draw, Coco Gauff continued her push for another major title as she battled her way past Belinda Bencic in a tough three-set contest. Jessica Pegula also kept her campaign alive after surviving a stern challenge from young American Iva Jovic, while Karolina Muchova edged Barbora Krejcikova to secure her place in the last eight.
On the men’s side, the big names continued their pursuit of glory on the famous grass courts. Novak Djokovic remained firmly in the spotlight as the seven-time Wimbledon champion continued his chase for more history at the All England Club, while Jannik Sinner also remained among the leading contenders.
The action continues on Monday with another packed schedule in London as the race for the Wimbledon titles intensifies.
Fans will be keeping a close eye on the remaining title contenders as the quarter-final picture takes shape. The men’s draw promises more high-quality tennis, with several of the tournament favourites looking to keep their championship dreams alive.
In some of Monday’s ladies’ singles fourth-round action, Italy’s Jasmine Paolini will face Alexandra Eala of the Philippines, while ninth seed Linda Noskova of Czechia will take on Madison Keys of the USA.
In the men’s singles, second seed Alexander Zverev will go up against Jiri Lehecka of Czechia. Fifth seed Alex de Minaur faces ninth seed Flavio Cobolli, while sixth seed Taylor Fritz will be up against tenth seed Alexander Bublik in another highly anticipated clash.
With the second week underway, Wimbledon has already produced major shocks, emotional victories and world-class tennis – and there is still plenty more drama expected before the champions are crowned on Centre Court.
