The family of an internationally acclaimed actor hailing from Mahikeng is preparing to give him a dignified final send-off.
The journey toward closure follows a heartfelt memorial service held in the Mmabatho Convention Centre on Tuesday (3/6), where friends, colleagues, fans, and government officials gathered to honour the life and legacy of the talented Presley “Cobrizi” Chweneyagae.
Actor Israel Matseke Zulu shared moving memories of his close friend and colleague. “He didn’t take a lot of things seriously, we partied like rock stars actually; we had fun,” Zulu recounted.
‘Winning an Oscar comes with responsibility’
“We had our great time in life. And the work, he respected his work. I’m one of the guys who respect the work. So when we work, we work! When we play, we play.”
He emphasised the importance of professionalism and passion that defined Chweneyagae’s approach to his craft.
“We respected our craft as actors, as filmmakers, as television actors. At work, we read, we do what we are supposed to do. We always wanted to be the best because we were defending the title. You know, winning an Oscar comes with responsibility,” he added.
Zulu also revealed the deep bond he shared with Chweneyagae, noting the actor’s growth and development were witnessed firsthand. Chweneyagae passed away on Tuesday (27/5) at the age of 40.
His uncle, Mzwakhe Sigudla, told the SABC the actor experienced difficulty breathing at the time of his death.
North West Acting Premier Keneilwe Mosenogi paid tribute to Chweneyagae’s impact on South African arts and culture. “He was a proud product of the North West province. He honed his craft at Mmabana Mahikeng, where his passion for dramatic arts flourished.”
She described him as more than just a talented actor, but a cultural icon whose contributions will resonate for generations. Chweneyagae’s achievements have left an indelible mark on the local and international stage.
His role in the 2005 film Tsotsi earned the film the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing global recognition to South African cinema.
He is also fondly remembered for his compelling portrayal of Cobra in DStv’s The River, a role that earned him a South African Film and Television Award for Best Actor. Demonstrating his versatility, he recently expanded his influence behind the scenes as the executive producer of the show’s spin-off, Cobrizi.
Theatrical work
His theatrical work includes notable performances in classics such as Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, showcasing his range and dedication to the craft.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy of creativity and passion he gifted to us all,” Mosenogi remarked, expressing her condolences. “My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.”
The North West provincial government pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure a respectful and dignified farewell for Chweneyagae. The actor will be laid to rest on Saturday (8/6) in Pretoria.
