The North West education department encourages inclusivity to combat discrimination against LGBTQI+ communities and build a safe and inclusive environment in schools.

On Friday (29/8), the department hosted an interactive session under the theme “Fostering a Culture of Fairness and Belonging” at the Seasons Wedding and Conference Centre in Mafikeng, bringing together educators, community leaders and LGBTQI+ representatives.

The session followed the recent National Teaching Awards, where North West education MEC Viola Motsumi celebrated teachers who have made exceptional contributions to nurturing the province’s learners.

This follow-up gathering reflected a deepened commitment to not only celebrate educators but also empower them with strategies to promote inclusivity and eliminate discrimination.

Motsumi emphasised the need to create safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments that acknowledge and support all individuals, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

“The aim here is to build schools where every teacher and learner feels safe, respected, and valued, regardless of their background. This session is a broader effort to build equality and diversity into all schools across the province,” stated Motsumi.

The session also addressed the persistent social challenges affecting North West schools, including bullying, discrimination and recent violent incidents linked to gangsterism.

Schools like Meriti Secondary School have come under scrutiny after two students were stabbed by former learners, resulting in both being admitted to the ICU.

Against this backdrop, Motsumi highlighted the urgency of reshaping school culture to one rooted in fairness and dignity for all.

She noted ongoing engagements with the LGBTQI+ community are part of a wider initiative to develop comprehensive departmental policies that explicitly prioritise inclusivity and safety.
