‘Community safety strengthened’ with opening of Sonskyn police station─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:31 Tue, 07 Oct 2025

The official opening of the new Sonskyn Police Station in Bloemspruit marks a significant step forward in enhancing community safety across the Free State, according to police leadership.
The station, situated in Phase 5 of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, was opened on Tuesday (7/10) and is set to play a key role in improving service delivery, visibility, and rapid response in local policing efforts. Five vehicles were handed over to the station to enhance the rapid response to community members, and five others were donated to the Bloemspruit police station.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia, Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, provincial commissioner Lt. Gen Baile Motswenyane, and national commissioner Gen. Fannie Masemola highlighted that the new facility, the 112th police station in the province, represents the government’s commitment to eradicating crime and restoring public trust in law enforcement.
Both national and provincial leadership stressed that the success of the fight against crime depends on active collaboration between communities and law enforcement.
“The official opening of the new Sonskyn police station marks a significant milestone for the community of Sonskyn and the Free State at large,” said Cachalia. He called it a powerful symbol of partnership between citizens and government in the pursuit of safety, dignity, and peace.
“I urge police officers to take pride in their duty. Their role is one of service, not profit, and their uniforms symbolise trust, commitment, and public responsibility. Serve the community. Honour the code of conduct to which you have sworn loyalty.
“Help us to rebuild trust between our communities and the police. If we reduce crime, we will have communities that flourish. The new Sonskyn police station, therefore, stands not only as a building but as a beacon of renewed faith in the Constitution, the Republic, and the shared determination to build safe, thriving communities.”
The police also launched their Safer Festive Season on Tuesday (7/1) on the N1 North of Bloemfontein, where police and the traffic department implemented a roadblock.
Officials were on the lookout for stolen vehicles, illegal firearms, drugs, and people committing immigration violations, and ensured the public is aware of road safety and regulations.
