The North West department of education has embraced a spiritual approach in supporting its learners, turning to prayer to guide and strengthen matriculants during the National Senior Certificate exams.

On Wednesday (15/10), the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District hosted a prayer session at Vryburg High School. The gathering was termed “a show of unity and collective hope” for academic success, drawing together a wide range of stakeholders, including religious leaders, education officials, and community members.

The event was attended by district mayor Motseokae Maje, the speaker, religious ministers from various denominations, traditional authorities, and district quality learning and teaching campaign members.

Also present were 87 principals of secondary schools, the district management team, school governing bodies, representatives from sister departments, community members, the representative council of learners, and 250 matriculants.

Addressing the learners, Maje praised their perseverance and encouraged them to remain steadfast as they head into their final exams. “To all our Grade 12 learners, your commitment and dedication to your studies this year will enable you to form your pathway to post-school education; it will shape the rest of your life.

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think,” said Maje, urging learners to stay calm, focused, and to give their best during the exams.

Meanwhile, North West education MEC Viola Motsumi will lead a provincial prayer and pledge-signing ceremony on Friday at Waterkloof Secondary School in Rustenburg. Matriculants will be called to sign a pledge, committing to academic integrity and refraining from any form of exam misconduct.

‘Now is the time to call for divine intervention’

While every effort has been made to support learners academically, it is now time to call on a higher power, Motsumi said. “As a department, we have done all we can to support learners throughout the year.

“Teachers taught learners and conducted extra classes; the department conducted autumn, winter, and spring camps to assist the learners. Now is the time to call for divine intervention.”

The provincial prayer will be an occasion of collective faith and inspiration, she added. “In a spirit of unity and faith, participants will offer prayers, words of encouragement, and well-wishes during the provincial prayer, invoking God's wisdom and protection upon the learners.”
