Northern Cape police, stakeholders unite to improve transport and safety─── EVA MOLEKANE 07:00 Fri, 17 Oct 2025

The launch of Transport Month in the Northern Cape offers the government a chance to consider transportation-related issues and find solutions to enhance public transportation and related infrastructure.
As part of ongoing efforts to improve public transport, freight, and logistics systems, innovative solutions are required to address long-standing challenges. Provincial Police Commissioner Lt. Col. Koliswa Otola, accompanied by deputy provincial policing, crime detection, and corporate services commissioners, and transport safety and liaison MEC Limakatso Koloi, led the launch in Daniëlskuil on Wednesday (15/10).
Transport Month was introduced as a call to action for society to use public transport, reduce congestion, and enhance road safety, said transport, safety, and liaison head of department Rodney Peters.
Otola emphasised the police’s dedication to road safety initiatives throughout the province by pledging their continued support through vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks.
“During Operation Shanela 2 and the inter-provincial cross-border operations, police actions will be intelligence-driven, targeting criminal activities across borders.”
These include transportation and movement of stolen vehicles and firearms, drug trafficking, copper cable theft, stock theft, and undocumented persons, as well as the apprehension of wanted suspects, she said.

They are dedicated to working with stakeholders, other law enforcement organisations, the department of transport, safety and liaison, and others to make roads safer, police said. Joint operations and awareness campaigns will continue to boost efforts to prevent crime and advance road safety.
Transport Month signifies a shared commitment by the government and law enforcement to enhancing public transportation and road safety, officials said.
The goal of authorities’ targeted operations, continuous cooperation, and awareness-raising is to make roads safer, reduce crime, and guarantee a safe and effective transportation environment for all citizens.
