Eight women who died in a horrific accident on the N3 near Harrismith in the Free State will be laid to rest on Saturday (8/11).

The accident occurred early on Thursday (30/10), between Van Reenen’s Pass and Montrose. The women were travelling in a minibus taxi that collided with a light truck.

Six other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital in Harrismith for treatment.

Six of the victims will be buried in Virginia, while two will be laid to rest in Welkom. Families, friends, colleagues, and government officials have all expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss.

On Thursday (6/11), a memorial service to honour the lives of Seipati Kolisang, Maria Hlapi, Matshepo Hlapi, Daphney Mokopu, and Seipati Filita, five of the women who died in the crash while travelling to Durban, was held in Welkom.

Matjhabeng executive mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha paid tribute to the victims, acknowledging their significant contribution within the Early Childhood Development (ECD) fraternity.

He described them as dedicated women who were deeply passionate about nurturing young minds and laying a strong educational foundation for future generations.

“Their passing is not only a loss to their families and friends, but also to our entire community of Matjhabeng. They embodied the true spirit of care, compassion, and service qualities that define the essence of ECD practitioners. Their legacy will continue to live on through the many children whose lives they have shaped.”

Free State premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae had expressed shock and sadness at the news of the tragedy. She appealed to motorists to exercise caution and patience on the roads, urging all road users to obey traffic laws to prevent further loss of life.

Letsoha-Mathae had announced her intention to visit the bereaved families before the funerals. However, according to some family members, the premier did not show up.
