The Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (Pacofs) has announced a new partnership initiative with schools across the Free State.

The programme aims to encourage artistic development, increase community participation, and give learners access to professional theatre environments. It invites schools with their own productions to stage them at Pacofs’ venues.

“The most important thing for me about this programme is to get children introduced to theatre, to get them into the theatre, and also to bring parents back to the theatre,” said Michelle Horn, stage services manager at Pacofs.

Schools that participate will benefit from using a professional theatre venue for their annual productions, along with access to Pacofs’ technical staff, facilities, and equipment.

To qualify, schools must take full responsibility for their production – including the cast, direction, rehearsals, and costumes – and handle all marketing within their school communities. Each school is required to sell a minimum of 572 tickets for the Sand du Plessis Theatre, or 180 tickets for the André Huguenet Theatre.

“I believe theatre and the arts play a strong role in building children’s confidence – not just for performing, but for life,” said Horn.

Nurturing future talent

The partnership is accepting sign-ups and agreement signings from October to December 2025. The first round of student productions will be presented at Pacofs theatres in 2026.

Horn explained that the first year will serve as a trial run, with potential expansion plans in the following years.

After the initial phase, the organisation hopes to introduce workshops and masterclasses with professional performers and directors, covering both acting and technical fields.

“This programme allows Pacofs to strengthen ties with the community while nurturing the next generation of theatre-makers and audiences,” said Pacofs CEO Themba Dlamini.

Schools interested in participating can send a proposal or inquiry to info@pacofs.co.za.
