Grey College mourns loss of beloved teacher─── REFILWE BEKANE 12:00 Tue, 06 Jan 2026
The Grey College community is mourning the loss of a teacher who’s been described as a pillar of the school and a dedicated mentor to generations of learners.
Tewie Wessels, who served the institution for 15 years, was widely respected for his versatility, warmth, and deep commitment to the values of the Grey family. The 61-year-old died in a road accident on Monday afternoon (5/1) approximately 30 km outside Dealesville.
His vehicle reportedly struck a pothole. His wife, Natasja, is recovering in the hospital. The school has confirmed while she sustained various fractures, her condition is stable.
During his 15-year tenure at Grey College, Wessels maintained a versatile role that balanced classroom teaching with extracurricular leadership. He also held an administrative position, representing his colleagues on the school governing body.
His influence was equally prominent on the sports field, says Grey College headmaster Braam van Wyk. Wessels served as head of cricket and manager of the first hockey team, while also providing long-term coaching and coordination for the school’s rugby programme.
By managing these diverse responsibilities, he played a central part in both the academic and athletic life of the school.

Van Wyk described the atmosphere at the school as somber, noting Wessels was a loving person who never hesitated to give of his time for the benefit of the school and his friends.
He was known for his constant smile and for embodying the family values that Grey College strives to instill in its boys.
“He was willing to sacrifice himself on behalf of the school, his friends, and those dear to him. I believe that is something which will serve as an example to all of us,” said Van Wyk.
Wessels is also survived by his two sons, both Grey old boys.
