The Free State Provincial Legislature has cautioned motorists about planned road closures ahead of the state of the province address (Sopa) at the Old Grey events centre on Friday (20/2).

The official opening of the provincial legislature will see Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae outline the provincial government’s plans for the year ahead. She is also expected to report back on progress made since the previous Sopa and share strategies on how the government intends to improve the province’s economy.

Rehearsals for the Sopa started on Wednesday (18/2) at 10:00 along the parade route, primarily affecting Park Road and Botenger Avenue. Motorists were advised to expect an increased police presence and intermittent traffic stops during these times.

On Friday, key intersections along Park Road will be closed to ensure the procession proceeds without disruption, said Free State Legislature spokesperson Jongi Ndakana. The intersections of Park Road and Ehrlich Street, as well as Park Road and Parfitt Avenue, will be closed from 07:30 until 11:00. Botenger Avenue will be affected between 09:00 and 09:30 only.

Measures necessary

“To facilitate the smooth coordination of this provincial event, permission to utilise the Jukskei parking area has been requested and awaiting approval. The police’s drilling team will start their parade formation from this parking lot, and it will also be used as a parking lot for the public attending the event on Friday.”

Ndakana apologised for any inconvenience the temporary disruptions may cause tenants and visitors, emphasising the measures are necessary to ensure the safety and success of the official legislative programme.
