Initiative launched to reopen vandalised Welkom swimming pool─── REFILWE BEKANE 15:00 Mon, 02 Mar 2026
A community-led initiative has formed in Welkom to facilitate the restoration and reopening of the public swimming pool.
Residents, local business owners, and various stakeholders are called to support the initiative to restore the facility to working order. The organisation Voice of Change said it’s seeking a formal meeting with the Matjhabeng municipality to discuss a collaborative partnership for the renovation process.
“The initiative aims to leverage existing resources while integrating private sector support to address the structural damage caused by vandalism,” said spokesperson Tabile David Masunane.
The swimming pool previously served as a venue for school swimming competitions before its closure. Despite the current state of the infrastructure, municipal staff members remain stationed at the site to conduct basic maintenance and cleaning duties.
Organisers have issued a specific call for skilled tradespeople, including carpenters, to contribute their labour to the restoration efforts. The objective of the project is to ensure the facility is available for use by all residents within Matjhabeng.
The proposed meeting with municipal officials is intended to establish a framework for how the community and the state will manage the site once repairs are completed.
“We want to ensure the facility is enjoyed by the Matjhabeng municipality,” said Masunane.
The renewal plan includes a comprehensive assessment of the plumbing, filtration systems, and the surrounding woodwork. Local businesses have been invited to provide materials and financial support to supplement the technical skills offered by community volunteers.
Stakeholders emphasise the restoration of the pool would provide a necessary recreational space for youth and athletic programmes that have been displaced since the facility’s decline.
The organisers maintain the presence of on-site staff provides a baseline for a swift transition back to full operations if the structural issues are addressed.
