Mangaung begins zoo upgrades, staff recruitment─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:58 Tue, 10 Mar 2026
Restoration work at the Bloemfontein Zoo is gaining momentum as Mangaung metro moves forward with plans to reopen the long-closed facility.
Infrastructure upgrades, regulatory compliance, and the recruitment of specialist staff are underway as part of the first phase of the project. Authorities are now working on a phased approach to restore the facility, starting with repairs and operational preparations before animals are brought back.
At a special council meeting held in March last year, it was decided the zoo would be open to the public by 2028 after renovations.
Mayor Gregory Nthatisi previously said the budget for the zoo is more than R20m for the maintenance and upkeep.
“Three contractors have been appointed to focus specifically on electricity, plumbing, painting, refurbishment of enclosures, fencing, and mechanical work,” said city manager Sello More.
“An advert to appoint specialists closed in February, and a labour requisition has been submitted for the appointment of, among others, zookeepers, veterinarians, and animal nutritionists. The animals will only be accommodated once the zoo enclosures have been completed.”
A list of animals was submitted to the provincial department of economic development and tourism, and an inspection was conducted in preparation for the issuance of permits for commercial exhibition.
The municipality said it has not acquired animals yet and is now focusing on meeting legal requirements and obtaining the necessary permits.
The zoo was closed in 2019 after complaints from the public about the care of the animals. Photos of the zoo were circulated on social media.
The High Court in Bloemfontein ruled in September the zoo is prohibited from keeping any endangered or protected animals unless the necessary permits are obtained. The court also ordered the institution may only reopen if a proper budget is drawn up to operate it legally and sustainably.
“I have chatted with my colleague in the wildlife protection unit regarding updates on the Bloemfontein Zoo,” said National Council of SPCAs communications lead Samanta Stelli. “We can confirm that Destea will not issue permits until the municipality has met with the NSPCA, which has not yet happened.”
