South Africa commemorates the 1976 Soweto youth uprising today which took place 50 years ago.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Tuesday (16/6) lead the National Youth Day Commemoration and deliver the keynote address at the national event taking place at the FNB Premium Parking precinct adjacent to the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg.

This year’s National Youth Day marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 youth uprising, one of the defining moments in South Africa’s liberation struggle and democratic journey.

The commemoration is held under the theme: “RESET @50 – Our national commitment to the future for freedom lives in every generation.” It honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of the young people who stood up against injustice and helped shape the future of a free and democratic South Africa.

Across the country, political parties and community organisations are also marking Youth Day with local initiatives aimed at empowerment and reflection.

DA Free State leader Roy Jankielsohn said the DA in the Free State is commemorating Youth Day in Rocklands, Mangaung, through a community soccer tournament and youth empowerment activities.

“Youth Day is a time to honour the sacrifices of the past while taking ownership of the future,” said Jankielsohn. “The young people of today will shape the future of the Free State, and it is our responsibility to support and empower them.

“As we commemorate this important day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating opportunities for young people and building a Free State where every young person can succeed.”

“In addition to the tournament, we are hosting a CV assistance table to help young people prepare and improve their CVs, contributing to their ability to apply for employment opportunities and build brighter futures.”

In Gauteng, the Midvaal municipality officially opened the multi-million-rand Lakeside Multipurpose Centre while also hosting its annual Mayoral Youth Games in commemoration of Youth Day.

The new facility introduces modern sports infrastructure aimed at providing safe recreational spaces and nurturing local sporting talent.

The provincial department of community safety, roads and transport also hosted a Youth Day commemoration event under the theme: “Engage, Empower and Develop.” The event took place at the Universal Church in Bloemfontein.

The programme focused on youth empowerment, road safety awareness and skills development. Officials from the department said the initiative seeks to inspire young people to become responsible road users while also exposing them to career and educational opportunities through participation from government departments, higher education institutions and private sector partners.
