A community-led relief initiative is gearing up to host a fundraising drive in Kimberley, aimed at easing the growing impact of the Ekapa Minerals closure on hundreds of families.

The Ekapa Relief Fund aims to support affected families through food assistance and fundraising efforts. The fundraising event on Saturday, 11 April at the Kimberley Rugby Club will serve as both a lifeline for those in need and a platform to unite the community in support of struggling households, said the organisers.

The Ekapa mine was closed in February after applying for liquidation, leaving more than a thousand workers without salaries or job security. A short while before, five miners were trapped approximately 890m underground during a mud rush on Tuesday, 17 February.

Rescue operations remain ongoing to find the remaining four miners, as teams work through mud, debris, and damaged equipment.

“This initiative started as a way to bring hope and practical support to families during a very difficult time,” said Ekapa Relief Fund founder Mari Myrtle Venter. “The response from the community has been incredible, and every contribution is helping us make a real difference.

“Central South Africa, Kimberley needs your support. You’ve probably heard about the mine closure; there are so many families affected without food, salaries, and facing evictions. It is terrible, please assist us.”

The event will feature live performances by local artists, a variety of food stalls, and a play area for children, offering a family-friendly environment for all attendees. “It’s going to be a fun day with local artists, food stalls, and a play area for children.”

Through Venter’s coordination, a large-scale food drive has already gained momentum, with schools, churches, businesses, and residents across Kimberley donating essential items. These contributions are being used to assemble food hampers for households struggling to cope in the aftermath of the mine’s closure.

All proceeds and donations will go directly towards the Ekapa Relief Fund, which is dedicated to assisting families affected by the mine closure. Members of the public and businesses are encouraged to support the initiative through donations or by attending the event.

Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul also announced assistance to families in the form of R10,000 each and R3,000 food vouchers for workers affected by the liquidation.
