Engo is a Christian-based, non-profit and non-governmental welfare organisation that has become a cornerstone of social support in the Free State. As the largest charity of its kind in the province and the second largest in South Africa, Engo has built a reputation for compassion, inclusivity, and impact. Its mission is to serve communities across all races, cultures, and ages, offering care and hope to poor families, children, the elderly, disabled individuals, and patients in need.

During the 2024/25 financial year, Engo reached more than 200,000 people through its diverse programs. This remarkable achievement underscores the organisation’s commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable groups and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Engo’s work is organised into seven sub-programmes, each designed to meet specific needs within the community:

Engo operates 32 child and youth care centres, providing safe and nurturing environments for between 700 and 800 children who have been removed from unsafe situations by the Children’s Court. These centres offer stability, education, and emotional support, helping children rebuild their lives.

With ten family care offices across the Free State, Engo reaches close to 89,000 people annually. These offices provide essential services to needy families and children, offering counseling, material support, and guidance to strengthen family units and promote resilience.

In Bethlehem, Engo runs a day care centre dedicated to twelve disabled individuals. This centre focuses on teaching practical skills, fostering independence, and helping participants integrate into the local community. Many beneficiaries are supported in finding meaningful employment, enhancing their dignity and quality of life.

Engo operates 20 aged care centres, which include independent housing schemes, frail care facilities, and two dementia units. These centres collectively care for approximately 2,800 elderly people, ensuring they receive medical attention, companionship, and a safe environment in which to thrive.

Engo’s hospital care provides face-to-face ministry work in hospitals in Bloemfontein. In addition, the program has expanded to offer online support, reaching more than 17,000 people. This service brings spiritual comfort and emotional support to patients and their families during difficult times.

Engo facilitates adoption processes, placing adoptable children into the permanent care of suitable parents. The programme also assists with origin enquiries, helping individuals trace their roots and understand their personal histories.

Recognising the importance of caring for those who serve, Engo’s employee wellness program supports more than 1,000 staff members. By focusing on their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, Engo ensures that its workforce remains strong and capable of delivering high-quality care.

Engo’s work is a testament to the power of compassion and faith in action. By addressing the needs of children, families, the elderly, disabled individuals, and patients, Engo is building stronger communities and offering hope where it is most needed.
