Premier assesses Sol Plaatje water infrastructure upgrade | News Article

Northern Cape Premier Zamani Saul recently conducted an oversight visit to the Riverton Water Treatment Plant in the Sol Plaatje Municipality, where he assessed progress on one of the province's most significant infrastructure investments.

The visit formed part of ongoing oversight of the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) project, which is aimed at upgrading and modernising the municipality's ageing bulk water infrastructure. National Treasury approved R2.5 billion for the initiative, making it the largest water infrastructure investment in the history of the Northern Cape.

Currently in its third year of implementation, the seven-year project is already delivering visible improvements to water services across the municipal area. Through the investment, significant strides have been made in improving water quality, reducing water losses through leakages, and enhancing the reliability of supply to residents.

Among the key achievements highlighted during the visit were the improved quality of potable water supplied to communities, the elimination of routine nightly water shutdowns previously experienced by residents, and a substantial reduction in water leakages across the system.

The project has also delivered meaningful economic benefits. To date, 442 jobs have been created, while 44 small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) have benefited through participation in the project.

Addressing municipal leadership during the visit, Premier Saul emphasised the importance of organisational stability and effective governance to ensure continued service delivery improvements.

He outlined five key areas that should be avoided, including disruptive council meetings, unnecessary litigation, unplanned service interruptions, suspensions, and a return to provincial intervention measures.

At the same time, he called for accelerated efforts in four critical areas: service delivery, adherence to organisational processes, respect for political office, and the restoration of the municipality's dignity and integrity.

The Riverton Water Treatment Plant upgrades form a cornerstone of efforts to secure a sustainable and reliable water supply for residents of Sol Plaatje Municipality while supporting economic growth and improving quality of life across the region.

Premier Saul is also expected to continue his engagement in the municipality through participation in the launch of the Vala Zonke programme alongside Northern Cape MEC for Roads and Public Works, Fufe Makatong.
