Two of the farm workers who died in a Vaal River boat capsizing near Douglas are being laid to rest on Saturday (27/6).

The funerals are for two of the farm workers who tragically drowned in the Vaal River near Douglas in the Northern Cape, following a devastating accident involving a makeshift boat that capsized.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 18 June, when approximately 20 farm workers were being transported across the Vaal River from Vaallus Farm to Olierivier Farm. The makeshift vessel overturned midstream, throwing all occupants into the fast-flowing water.

Fourteen workers survived and were rescued, while six others went missing and were later confirmed to have drowned.

Since the tragedy, the provincial search and rescue unit, supported by police divers and emergency services, conducted an extensive search operation along the river. Recovery efforts continued over several days, despite interruptions due to adverse weather conditions.

“The body of a 25-year-old Malawian man, who was among the missing workers, was recovered on Friday (26/6) at approximately 12:00,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Molefi Shemane.

“We can confirm the bodies of all six individuals believed to have drowned in the incident have now been recovered, bringing closure to the search operation in the area.

"Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the drowning are continuing.”

Among the deceased are Landi Madjan,35, Neels Boom, 59, Trooi Olivier, 41, and Hans George, 55, while the identity of one victim has not yet been officially released by authorities.

Two of the deceased were Malawian nationals who were working on farms in the Douglas area.

Search teams were deployed on the day of the incident after reports the overloaded makeshift boat had capsized. It is understood the vessel is regularly used by farm workers to cross the river, typically carrying about 18 people, but on the day of the incident, it is alleged to have been carrying around 20 passengers.

‘Department stands with them during this difficult time’

Fourteen survivors were rescued and transported to the hospital in Douglas for treatment.

The Northern Cape MEC for agriculture, environmental affairs, rural development and land reform, Lebohang Motlhaping, said the tragedy has deeply saddened the department and the wider agricultural sector.

“We want the families to know that they are not alone. The department stands with them during this difficult time, and we will ensure appropriate support is extended to the families.”
