A Vanderbijlpark animal welfare advocate who has dedicated the past eleven years to caring for community cats is appealing to the public for urgent financial support.

Farzana Ismail, founder of The Feral Carer NPC, said the rising costs of feeding and treating hundreds of animals have become overwhelming. The costs are threatening her ability to continue supporting hundreds of animals unless more donors come forward.

Ismail, recently shared an emotional plea on social media, urging both long-time supporters and new followers to become active contributors to the organisation’s work.

What began as a small effort to help a handful of cats on a university campus in 2015 has grown into a full-time commitment involving dozens of feeding sites across the Vaal Triangle.

“While I remain committed to these cats, it’s becoming increasingly difficult. I find myself having to appeal for help every single day, and I urgently need more monthly donors and sponsors to keep this work going.

“I currently feed 28 community cat colonies across Vanderbijlpark, including university campuses and student accommodation. It costs around R1,800 a day just to keep the cats fed, and my monthly expenses reach about R45,000 before veterinary costs are even considered.

“Every donation, every share, every comment, and every act of kindness helps. Together, we can continue providing food, medical care, sterilisation, and hope to the community cats that rely on us every day.”

It includes approximately 54 feeding points, and she also cares for resident cats requiring ongoing treatment, medication, and veterinary attention.

The financial pressure extends well beyond feeding the animals. Ismail said she has accumulated significant veterinary debt while ensuring injured and sick cats receive treatment.

“I’m owing a six-figure amount at one veterinary practice and five-figure amounts at another. Altogether, I’m really stretched and desperately trying to secure enough donors to meet the R45,000 I need every month. It’s becoming emotionally, financially, and physically draining."

Members of the public who may not be in a position to make financial contributions may assist by purchasing cat food, sharing her social media posts, or helping raise awareness about the work being done.

Donations to The Feral Carer NPC can be made via electronic funds transfer, while supporters wishing to contribute food or assist with veterinary expenses are encouraged to contact the organisation through its social media platforms.
