Proteas aim to close series on a high─── MORGAN PIEK 10:20 Mon, 27 Apr 2026
The Proteas Women will be chasing a convincing 4–1 T20 International series win when they take on India at Willowmoore Park on Monday in the final match of the series.
South Africa head into the clash with a commanding 3–1 lead, although India finally got on the board on Saturday night with a hard-fought 14-run victory at the Wanderers in Johannesbrg.
That result was largely inspired by an outstanding all-round display from Deepti Sharma, who anchored the innings with an unbeaten 36 before ripping through the Proteas batting line-up with a superb 5/19.
Her performance ultimately denied South Africa what would have been a rare and emphatic series whitewash.
Despite the setback, the Proteas Women remain firmly in control of the series and will be eager to respond with a clinical performance in Benoni as they continue fine-tuning their combinations ahead of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales in June.
With the final squad yet to be confirmed, Monday’s encounter represents a crucial last audition for players hoping to cement their spots on the plane to the UK.
All-rounder Eliz-Mari Marx, who featured in just her 11th T20I at the Wanderers, contributed a steady unbeaten 21 and picked up 2/28 with the ball. The 24-year-old remained grounded in her assessment of the defeat, insisting there was no need for blame as the team continues to build towards the global showpiece.
“There’s really nothing to blame,” said Marx.

“We lost a few crucial wickets in clusters and probably lacked partnerships at key moments, but it’s all part of the bigger picture as we build towards the World Cup.
“We’re focusing on specific areas we want to improve on. It’s not about pointing fingers at individuals – it’s about learning, growing, and making sure we’re at our best when it matters most.”
Monday’s final in Benoni gets underway at 14:00.
